Cody vs Lovable

Pricing

Cody: Enterprise only, from $16,000 a year

Lovable: Free tier, Starter from $20/mo

Description

Cody: Sourcegraph's AI coding assistant, sold only with Sourcegraph Enterprise since the Free and Pro plans ended in July 2025

Lovable: Describe your app idea, get a working React + Supabase app you can actually edit and deploy

Pros

  • Uses Sourcegraph's code search to answer questions across large codebases
  • Works in VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio (experimental), the Sourcegraph web app and a CLI
  • Sourcegraph says it does not use customer data to train models
  • Generates full-stack apps (React frontend + Supabase backend) from a description
  • Built-in Supabase integration handles auth, database, and storage
  • Non-technical founders can build real, functional products

Cons

  • No plan for individuals: Cody Free and Cody Pro ended on 23 July 2025
  • Sourcegraph Enterprise requires a yearly contract starting at $16,000
  • Built for engineering organizations, not solo founders
  • You get what the AI decides: limited control over code architecture and patterns
  • Complex business logic still needs a developer to implement properly
  • Tied to React + Supabase stack whether that is the right choice or not

Details

Cody’s strength is Sourcegraph’s code graph. While most AI tools see only the files you have open, Cody can draw on an index of your whole repository, so it can answer questions like “where is the authentication logic?” even when those files are closed.

Sourcegraph stopped new Cody Free and Pro sign-ups on 25 June 2025 and ended both plans on 23 July 2025. Cody is now available only on Sourcegraph Enterprise, which starts at a $16,000 yearly contract, and Sourcegraph pointed individual users to Amp, its separate coding agent. For a solo founder, GitHub Copilot is the closest low-cost editor assistant, Cursor gives whole-codebase context in a full editor, and Claude Code works across a repository from the terminal.

Lovable (formerly GPT Engineer) is for founders who have an idea and want a working app, not a wireframe or a mockup. You describe what you want, and it generates a full-stack React app with a Supabase backend: auth, database, the works. You can then edit the code or keep iterating with prompts.

This is not a toy. People have shipped real MVPs with it. But know the limits: the generated code follows patterns the AI knows, which may not be the best patterns for your specific use case. If your app is a straightforward CRUD tool or marketplace, Lovable can get you 80% there. If you need complex real-time features or unusual architecture, you will hit walls.
