Google Workspace vs Linear

Pricing

Google Workspace: From $7 per user/mo on an annual plan ($8.40 month to month); 14-day trial

Linear: Free for small teams, from $8/user/mo

Description

Google Workspace: Google's business suite: Gmail on your own domain, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Meet, with Gemini built in

Linear: Issue tracking that is absurdly fast and keyboard-driven, the anti-Jira

Pros

  • Professional email at your own domain on every plan
  • Business Starter includes 30 GB of storage per user, video meetings for up to 100 people and Gemini in Gmail
  • The Flexible plan bills monthly for the users you have, and you can cancel at any time
  • Fastest project management UI you will ever use: everything is instant
  • Keyboard shortcuts for everything so you rarely touch the mouse
  • GitHub integration syncs issues with PRs and branches automatically

Cons

  • Business Starter leaves out Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive; those start on Business Standard at $14 per user a month on an annual plan
  • Recording Meet calls needs Business Standard or higher
  • Introductory discounts apply to new customers for the first 12 months only
  • Opinionated workflow: it wants you to work its way, not the other way around
  • Limited customization compared to Notion or Jira
  • Overkill if you just need a simple to-do list

Details

Workspace gives you email at your own domain plus Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Meet under one login. Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, is built into Gmail on every plan and into the other apps from Business Standard up.

Business Starter covers the basics for one person: email, 30 GB of pooled storage per user and meetings for up to 100 people. Business Standard ($14 per user a month on an annual plan) adds 2 TB of storage, meeting recordings, appointment booking pages and eSignature in Docs and PDFs.

The prices on the pricing page assume a one-year commitment. Paying month to month on the Flexible plan costs more: $8.40 per user for Business Starter. New customers also get introductory prices for their first 12 months, on up to 20 users.

Linear is what happens when people who were frustrated with Jira build their own issue tracker. Every interaction is instant: no loading spinners, no waiting for pages. Keyboard shortcuts let you triage, assign, and move issues without touching the mouse.

For solo founders who also write code, the GitHub integration is the real selling point. Create a branch from a Linear issue, open a PR, and the issue moves automatically. It forces a clean workflow. The free tier covers individual use. If you are managing more than a sticky-note to-do list but less than a full Jira installation, Linear is the sweet spot.
