Windsurf Plugin (formerly Codeium) vs Cursor
Pricing
Windsurf Plugin (formerly Codeium): Brand retired, plugin in maintenance mode under Devin Desktop
Cursor: Free tier, Pro from $20/mo (usage-based)
Description
Windsurf Plugin (formerly Codeium): The Codeium autocomplete extension, renamed Windsurf Plugin in 2025 and now a maintenance-mode companion to Devin Desktop, formerly Windsurf IDE
Cursor: AI code editor (VS Code fork) that lets you talk to your codebase, autocomplete across files, and refactor with a prompt
Pros
- Existing installs keep working in VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, Vim, Neovim, Jupyter, Chrome and Eclipse
- Keeps AI completions in your current editor instead of switching IDEs
- Feels like VS Code: your extensions and shortcuts just work
- Tab completions predict multi-line changes, not just single words
- Can reference your entire codebase when answering questions
Cons
- All plugins are in maintenance mode: no new features
- Cascade in the JetBrains plugin is being deprecated, and the JetBrains remote plugin is no longer maintained
- The maker recommends Devin Desktop, or Devin over ACP in JetBrains, instead
- Free tier runs out fast: expect to hit the Pro paywall within a week of real use
- Sometimes confidently suggests wrong code, especially for less popular libraries
- Each plan includes a set amount of model usage, and extra usage is billed afterwards, so costs are harder to predict
Details
Codeium was a free AI autocomplete extension that worked in almost any editor: VS Code, JetBrains, Vim, Emacs and more. Its company built the Windsurf editor on top of it and, in April 2025, renamed itself Windsurf, retiring the Codeium brand and renaming the extensions Windsurf Plugin. Cognition bought the Windsurf business later in 2025 and renamed the editor Devin Desktop on 2 June 2026. codeium.com now opens the Devin Desktop site.
The plugins still exist, but Cognition’s documentation lists all of them as in maintenance mode and recommends the Devin Desktop editor, or Devin over ACP inside JetBrains IDEs. For AI completion in your current editor with active development, GitHub Copilot is the usual choice. If you are willing to switch editors, Devin Desktop or Cursor give you completion plus agent features.
If you already use VS Code, Cursor is the shortest path to having AI actually understand your project. It does more than autocomplete: you can highlight code and ask “why is this breaking?” or tell it “add error handling to all API routes” and watch it edit multiple files.
The tab completions are the killer feature. They predict what you are about to type based on what you just did, and they are eerily good at continuing patterns. The free Hobby tier gives you a taste, but its Agent requests are limited and run out quickly. Pro at $20/month is where most solo devs land, with Pro+ and Ultra above it for heavy agent use. Every plan includes a set amount of model usage, and anything beyond it is billed afterwards, so keep an eye on your usage if you are doing heavy agent work. Anysphere, the company that makes Cursor, became part of SpaceX when SpaceX completed its acquisition on 14 August 2026.
